Course Outline for Lectures:

  • The Design Process, Design Methodology, Integrated Product Development
  • Materials Selection encompassing Advanced Composites
  • Designing with Composites
  • The Science and Practice of Joining: Bonded, Bolted, Welded Concepts
  • Rotating Shafts: Torsion, Bending, Vibration, Static, & Fatigue Strength
  • The Design & Analysis of Geared Drive Systems

Course Objectives:

  • Development of appreciation for open-ended design and the design process.
  • Acquisition of abilities to apply basic engineering skills and analysis methods.
  • Function as a project design team with specific responsibilities.
  • Development of effective written and oral presentation skills. 

Grading Criteria:

  • 40% GROUP PROJECT: Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System
    (20% Mid-term Progress Report* - Structural Arm Boom Design; 20% Final Project Report* - Mechanical Design & Drive System plus Integration.)
  • *Reports comprise both written & oral presentation
  • 40% FINAL EXAMINATION: 3 of 4 Questions in 3 hours
  • 20% HOMEWORKS: Each Major Section of Course and Aligned with Final Examination Questions
  • BONUS: Quizzes-Each Major Section Course
  • DISCUSSION SESSIONS: Arranged with TA assigned to your group. Recommended weekly (minimum)
