| After receiving his B.Sc. degree in Applied Sciences,
with a specialization in Materials Science, from the University of Sussex,
Professor Clarke joined the research staff of the National Physical Laboratory
(NPL) in England. Whilst on leave from NPL, he studied at the Cavendish
Laboratory, Cambridge University, obtaining a Ph.D. degree in Physics.
In 1974, he came to the USA joining the University of California, Berkeley and then in 1977 moved to Rockwell International Science Center as a member of the Structural Ceramics Group, later becoming group leader. Subsequently, he was an Associate Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then joined the staff at IBM Research Division in Yorktown Heights, New York. There, he was successively Manager of the Ceramic Sciences Group and then Senior Manager of the Materials Department. In 1990, he joined the UCSB faculty. As a consequence
of his experience and responsibilies in government, industry and academia,
Professor Clarke has been involved in many different materials research
and development programs, contributing to ceramics, metals, composites
