The research preeminence of the Mechanical Engineering faculty is reflected in an excellent record of extramural funding, which annually exceeds $15,000,000. Among a number of indices of quality, the most recent National Research Council Review of Graduate Programs ranked the Department fourth in total publications per faculty and first in citations per faculty among leading mechanical engineering programs. The Department's many faculty honors include two memberships in the National Academy of Engineering; Fellows of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Nuclear Society; the ASME Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal; the US Department of Energy E.O. Lawrence Award; and five UCSB Distinguished Teaching Awards.
