Frederick A. Leckie

Frederick A. Leckie
Professor Emeritus

Department of Mechanical and Environmental Engineering
University of California, Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, CA 93106-5070

Ph.D., Stanford University, 1958

Solid Mechanics, Materials, and Structures: high-temperature properties of composites and design with brittle and ductile materials.

Professor Leckie joined the Department of Mechanical and Environmental Engineering as its Chair in 1987 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering (1955) and a Ph.D. in Mechanics (1958) from Stanford University. Between 1958 and 1968 he lectured in mechanical sciences at the University of Cambridge and was a fellow of Pembroke College. In 1968 he became professor of engineering at the University of Leicester, then moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978, where he was a professor in the mechanical engineering department and chaired the design and materials division, and in 1984 became head of the Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Department. As a world-renowned experimentalist and theoretician in mechanics and design, Professor Leckie's research interests are concerned with the strength and design of structures and components, especially those which sustain load at elevated temperatures. Other interests include mathematical description of material properties, the development and application of approximate methods in solid and structural mechanics, computer-aided design, high-temperature creep deformation and rupture in composite materials, and application of multimedia for technology transfer.

Recognitions and Honors:

  • Fellow, American Academy of Mechanics (1980)
  • Fellow American Society of Mechanical Engineers
