SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS & AWARDS

(IGERT Grant-Fellowship support)
5 Year $2.7 million NSF grant
Joint undertaking of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management
and the Department of Economics (UCSB)

  • A major NSF Grant for a new multidisciplinary Ph.D. program, spanning environmental science and economics.
We seek outstanding quantitatively trained students from a variety of disciplines. The program is strongly in economics, we are looking for a broader set of prospective students, students quantitatively trained with majors in the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, agriculture and economics. Joint undertaking of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, and the Department of Economics here at UCSB dubbed, Economics and Environmental Science (EES). The (IGERT grant), is for student fellowship support. We are able to offer all accepted students who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents a full four or five years of fellowship support, which includes $18,000/year living expenses, plus most tuition and fees. We hope to have about 10 students entering the program this coming fall. This innovative Ph.D. program in addition to receiving rigorous training in economics, receive some depth of training in a companion natural science. The four natural sciences focus areas are climate, applied ecology, hydrology and marine science.

Students need not have any economics preparation prior to entering the program. Students with solid preparation in math and the natural sciences with an interest in economics and environmental policy would be ideal. For more information see www.bren.ucsb.edu/programs/EnvEcon or e-mail EESinfo@bren.ucsb.edu.

Applicants apply directly to Purdue University and must be recommended by the school for recommendation.

    Engineering Sciences Summer Institue (ESSI)
  • The Center for Materials and Engineering Sciences will provide education and research opportunities in applied mechanics for promising undergraduate and graduate students to: 1) encourage the pursuit of a graduate degree 2) facilitate the development of thesis work, 3) encourage the pursuit of scientific careers in general, and 4) provide exposure to the nantional laboratory environment so they may consider careers in scientific fields critical to the DOE mission. Engineering sciences, which is critical to the DP mission, requires a background in materials, mathematics, and modeling and simulation.

    University of California Energy Institute
  • California Energy Studies Program

Proposals are invited for new research projects and for continuation of projects currently supported by UCEI, Awards will be based on individual merit, although the Energy Institute may choose to concentrate funding in areas that have particular relevance to California's energy future and where UCEI's contribution can be especially significant. This year we are especially interested in research relevant to California's changing electricity and gasoline markets. Recipients of awards may be required to participate in and present results of research at workshops and conferences sponsored by the Energy Institute.

  • Energy Science and Technology Program

Awards are for seed funding only; anyone who received a previous EST grant either (a) during the past two years (2000-2001, 2001-2002) or (b) on a related topic is ineligible. Recipients of the awards are expected to produce extramural proposals within the period of the award and to indicate their UCEI affiliation on the proposals.
