Remote Desktop is a client/server tool that allows you to connect to a Windows machine remotely. Clients exist for all operating systems known to me. Here are a few easy steps to connect to your computer remotely.
Make sure Remote Desktop is enabled and an exception exists in your firewall
Enable Remote Desktop
- Right click on "My Computer"
- Click "Properties"
- Click "Remote" tab on top
- Check the box that says "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
You don't need to "Select Remote Users" because if your permissions are sufficient to allow users to connect, then your account is already allowed to connect, otherwise, you will not be able to connect and need to send me an email.
- Click "OK"
Enable exception in firewall
- Click "Start" button
- Select "Settings"
- Click "Control Panel"
- Double click on "Windows Firewall"
- Click "Exceptions" tab
- Make sure "Remote Desktop" is checked
- Click OK
Download and configure Putty
- Go to http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html and click on "putty.exe" to download it.
- Save it to your desktop
- Double click on "putty.exe" on your desktop
- Under "Host Name (or IP address)" type "linux.engr.ucsb.edu" (without quotes.)
- Under "Saved Sessions" type a name for this session like "Engineering Linux Server" (without quotes.)
- Click "Save" button.
- Click the plus sign next to "SSH" in the menu on the left.
- Click "Tunnels" in the menu that expanded below.
- For "Source port" type "3333" (without quotes.)
- For "Destination" type the full host name of your computer followed by a colon and number 3389.
You can also type your ip address if you know it. i.e. 22.214.171.124:3389
- Click the "Add" button.
- In the menu on the left, click "Session" near the top.
- Click the "Save" button again to save tunnel settings.
Everything above this line, if done correctly, only needs to be done once. Everything below, has to be done every time you connect!
Connect to the server with Putty
- Open Putty if it isn't already open.
- Highlight the session you just created.
- Click "Open" button on the bottom of Putty window.
- Click "Yes" if the security alert shows up.
- Type your username at the prompt, and press enter
- Type your password and press enter.
Note: Nothing will appear while you type your password -- it is normal.
- Once you get a prompt that says "username@linux##," you can minimize Putty window.
Connect to your computer with Remote Desktop
- Click "Start" button
- Click "Programs" or "All Programs"
- Click "Accessories"
- Click "Remote Desktop Connection"
Note: You may need to go to "Communications" if you have an older version.
- In the field that asks for computer, type "localhost:3333" (without quotes.)
- Click Connect, and you should see the remote screen asking you to log in.
